350 Pieces of Structural Steel

During a major renovation and expansion of Olin Library at Washington University in St. Louis, Kienlen performed demolition of a portion of the existing library and excavated two levels below ground for fit-out of additional space.

The process included temporarily jacking and supporting the weight of the entire library while the structure’s concrete piers were removed and new steel columns were installed. Kienlen also performed placement of all structural concrete and installation of structural steel, including a grand spiral staircase and curved glass handrail.

The occupied library remained open during construction, which required special attention to logistics to minimize noise disruption for students and staff.
